The recent events in our penitentiaries and jails are not something to be proud of. But it is not something new. The practice of giving special treatment to high-profile and burgis prisoners has always been present. But no one dares to speak against it. Perhaps because of fear. Or perhaps the guards and the ones responsible for keeping them inside the cell are part of a giant web of corruption.

I can still remember Pugad Baboy’s Pol Medina’s editorial cartton for the Philippine Daily Inquirer which appeared ages ago when VIP treatment to rich prisoners was a big issue (You can check his book Ink and Politics and look if the cartoon showing the opposite condition of rich and ordinary prisoners is still there.)

Call it a cliche, but still, money is power. It’s damn obvious. If you have oodles of money to spend, then you have the power to do what you want and pay other people to help you do your job.

This is not fiction. This is not a Teleserye-ish story of Gary David who manages to do his evil plot against Alvira and the Del Valles because of his (plundered) money. This is reality.

1. Ex- Batangas Governor Antonio Leviste

First things first. The guy has money, obviously. He came from a wealthy and influential family in Batangas (Wait, I’m also a Leviste. Okay, never mind.)

Friends, we cannot classify him as a “fugitive”. As what he said, puslit and takas are different things. #sarcasm

He’s the only prisoner that I knew that, during one of his “escapades”, had the courage to have his picture taken in front of the Binondo Church (like a real tourist). Souvenir po Sir?

2. Ex-Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan, Sr. Et Al

Again, this man, who is the patriarch of an influential family in Maguindanao, has money. Haven’t you seen their properties during the raids in their houses when Gloria Arroyo declared Martial Law in Maguindanao? Yeah, there’s the proof.

He was seen roaming around inside the prison compound. And reports said that he has an air-conditioned room/prison cell. Wow burgis! (But earlier this afternoon, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that the photos, according to DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo, were taken last year)

He was one of the suspects in one of the most gruesome massacre in history. If reports of VIP treatment and bribery are true, then I don’t know how to describe those scoundrels who gave him such special treatment.

The inequality between the rich and the poor is a cancer that we have been dealing with since the beginning of civilization. And it is here to stay for as long as there are selfish individuals and people who would do anything - regardless of morality and justice - for money and material things.

I wish for equality and justice in the Land of Juan. I wish a new world order where there are nor rich and poor, no injustice, and no inequality.

I also challenge the burgis kids on my network not to use their money and power to step down on people and to use them for their selfish deeds.

Enough of my preaching.

This issue of inequality and injustice is giving me a headache. Let’s have a feel good music first. I am inviting you to sit back and relax while listening to this music of Belle and Sebastian from their latest album Write About Love.

The flag that we have today was actually an original design by the first President of the First Philippine Republic, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy. The general subsequently tasked Marcela Marino de Agoncillo (regarded as the Mother of the Philippine Flag) to sew the first flag for the new republic, with the help of Marcela’s daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad.

While it is officially said that this proud flag was first unfurled during the Proclamation of Independence in Kawit, Cavite, there are historical records however that show that the first Philippine flag made its debut as displayed in a battle, one hundred and thirteen years ago today.

Certainly, more than a century of rich heritage of bravery and national pride.

Much is made about the loveliness of the Filipino female. But you wouldn’t know it by talking to the Filipino men — they’re too busy gazing lustfully into the mirror.

According to a study from Synovate, Filipino men are the most narcissistic in Asia. A whopping 48 percent consider themselves sexually attractive.

And if the ladies reading this think the guys’ encounters with the brow tweazers are for your benefit, sorry — nine out of 10 Filipino men polled said they liked to look good for themselves, not anyone else.

By way of comparison, just 25 percent of men in Singapore considered themselves sexually attractive, 17 percent in China and Taiwan and a measly 12 percent of Hong Kong guys think the same.
